History

Being an agro nation, Sri Lanka bears significant prominence in coconut cultivation through out the history. In the ancient scripture of Mahavamsa , it’s mentioned that coconut was cultivated in Island during the reign of King Aggabodhi (564 – 598 B.C) . Also in the travel records of the Chines Buddhist monk “Faxian” , who travelled across India to Sri Lanka during 477 B.C , has mentions of the coconut cultivation In Island. As well there are ample of historical record on presence of coconut cultivation during the Anuradhapura ( 377 B.C – 1017 BC ) and Kotte (1412- 1467)Kingdoms.

Ever since then coconut cultivation in Sri Lanka has grown to vast extents that not only it became a major social and a financial industry , but also created a culture among Sri Lankan livelihood. With a long driven history of coconut , this Island nation gradually has developed and expanded its’ coconut cultivation in mass scales , which at present earned the title as one of the key nations to export coconut and other related by products internationally.

Coconut bears approximately 12% of the agricultural produce in Sri Lanka , with a total land area covering over Four Hundred Thousand hectares , which produces nearly 2.6 Million tons of nuts annually. Coconut cultivation at present bears 0.6% of the GDP and earned a revenue of $ 537 million last year. With the concentration on mass cultivation process of coconut , Puttlam , Gampaha and Kurunegala major cities are margined and demarcated as the “Coconut Triangle”, which have been identified as the landmass that produces coconut in grand scale. Out of which Kurunegala district owns a significant prominence than any other are for coconut cultivation and production of other related by-products.

The North Western Province of Sri Lanka known as Wayamba Palatha , bears great historical and archaeological value since 12th century . Several Kingdoms such as Dambadeniya , Yapahuwa , Kurunagala and Panduwasnuwara Kingdoms , that were formed time to time on political grounds with in the region , have created majestic history in Wayamba . Apart from its’ high tourist attraction on archaeological and historical values, at present Kurunegala district covering a landmass of 4816 square kilometres and a population over 1.6 million , is widely known across the nation and beyond seas for it’s numerous coconut cultivation.

Among the great Kingdoms formed in the Kurunegala region , Panduwasnuwara Kingdom bears greater historical prominence for various socio-political reasons. The landscape , picturesque beauty , natural and historical heritage , of Panduwasnuwara draws tremendous attention of the public locally and internationally. But beyond all at present, the natural value of its’ flourishing soil have brought concentrated attention of the national economy related to Coconut cultivation. The region of Kurunegala , and Panduwasnuwara as a landmass, have the most naturally fertilized soil, precisely suitable for a flourishing coconut cultivation. The coconut growth of this region bears higher natural values than the coconut cultivation grown in the costal areas of Sri Lanka.
